You have seen displays in stores. You have seen more pink and red hearts all over every retail shop. You have seen the boxes of heart shaped candy on the shelves. You have seen thousands of red and pink roses coming to the florist shops. The spectre of yet another over commercialized holiday is beginning to hang over every one and every thing. There is supposed to be romance in the air, but all there is in these times is the smell of green dollars. And the dollar signs in the eyes of retail company owners everywhere! Especially in the store owners whose enterprises failed miserably at Christnas. But with yet another holiday that involves imports again, what perils will await the public now? Toxic red dye on the heart shaped boxes? Flowers with poisonous types of insect repellant on them which cause the recipient to break out in hives? We all know that there will be perils, as long as we keep importing everything under the sun from countries with totally rotten quality control. But it is still just a bit to far away to be worried, yet! But worry we will and be concerned, but that is the public feeling that way, the cheapo CEO’s who do all the importing don’t worry, don’t care, and are not even concerned that people get sick and or die from their goods, they just see the fat bottom line. BUT, enough of being morbid and scaring everyone to death. What we all know is coming is Valentines Day, or Saint Valentines day if you prefer. The one day of the year where love is supposed to be in bloom, and everyone is getting one thing or another for their significant others. Let’s go through the list shall we? Flowers, usually roses, prices doubled or trebled for the holiday, wilted and dead in a week. Candy, devoured either by your office friends or your kids and you are lucky if you got one piece out of the pound or two pound box. Then the weight adds on and you get mad at yourself for binging if you were lucky enough to get the entire box to yourself. There is the alternative, which is sugar free candy, it tastes great and you can’t tell that it is sugar free, the drawback is the additional time spent in the throneroom library for two days. Clothes, great idea, get the wrong size, or a made to self destruct import, or something that is just plain ugly! And even if you are lucky enough to pick out the one perfect item for each other, it is out of style in a week.
All of you are probably aware of this by now but for those that do not know, every year it gets more and more difficult to pick out a gift for someone. Every single gift giving holiday, and there are plenty of them, on the day after, there is a line of people in every store returning or exchanging for a myriad of reasons, size, color, duplicate item, just don’t like, to ugly to be seen wearing in public, etc. Now we get to the good part, no morbid talk, no problem reminding, just the good part.
